Julie holding a 21 Chromosome heart

Julie

Julie has Down Syndrome—a condition caused by an extra chromosome. But her grandpa saw it differently. He didn’t think it was extra at all. He said everyone else was missing it. He called it the Love Chromosome.

And once you spend time with Julie, you’ll absolutely agree—she’s incredibly wise and insightful.

The Love Chromosome is something Julie would love to share with the world. “I wish everybody could have one,” she says. And honestly? If you’re around her, you’ll see it everywhere—the countless, beautiful ways her Love Chromosome lights up and touches everyone around her.

He Went to Sleep an Athlete—
He Woke Up with a Superpower

Derek was a tenant of Gifted Alley with big dreams in sports when one evening everything changed. Random bleeding sent him into a coma for three days, and brain surgery left him paralyzed on his left side. It took years of hard work just to relearn the basics—walking, talking, everyday things most of us never think twice about. He still can’t use his left arm, and he walks with a limp. But through it all, Derek found what really kept him going: love. Love from his family, his friends, his faith—and learning to give that love right back, even in the midst of the hardest moments. With years of therapy and sheer determination, he made it back to the court and played competitive basketball overseas in 1993. Now Derek travels the world as a stand-up comic, motivational speaker, and one-armed magician, turning obstacles into opportunities and inspiring everyone he meets. “You should’ve seen me when I had two arms,” he says with that knowing smile—but the real strength? That was always there.
